Your Recent Searches Are Now Visible in Safari Update: Here’s How to Disable It

The most recent iOS 18.4.1 update has made it a bit more difficult to ignore your previous searches in Safari. Recent searches are now shown in a list with a prominent display.

The goal of the functionality, which is also included in the most recent iPadOS update, is to make it simpler to identify and access previous searches. Apple now makes this information visible by showing recent searches each time you hit the search bar, even though it was previously always saved in your search history.

However, some consumers could find it crowded or worry about their privacy.

The “Clear All” option in the recent searches list eliminates the entries, but new ones will keep coming up over time.

How to turn it off

Here’s an easy method to completely turning off the feature:

Toggle off Show Recent Searches in Settings > Apps > Safari.

Note that your search history will still be saved by Safari; it will simply not be shown in the list.

Tap the Tabs button and go to the Private area to start a Private Browsing window and stop searches from being stored.

Select how far back you want to remove your browser history by going to Settings > Apps > Safari > History and Website Data.
